What do I do if I receive a 550: Relaying Denied error?

The error message 550: Relaying Denied can be received from one of several ways.  It can be received through either your ISP or through the mail server here at AIT.  Here’s how you can tell where this error message is coming from.

  • Did you pop for your mail before trying to send a piece of email?
  • AIT’s systems require that you authenticate using your POP username/password before being able to send email.  Thus, if you are using a local email client such as Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, etc, then ensure you check mail before attempting to send mail.
  • Is your ISP blocking your connection to port 25 on your mail server?  Read more about this here.
  • If this is an issue, then you’ll need to either modify your mail server in your email client to be the SMTP server of your ISP, or perform other options described in the FAQ entry above.
