The registration lock prevents anyone from transferring your account or modifying it in any way (DNS modification, renewals, etc.) without your knowledge.
Keep in mind that almost all domains are in this lock position, and any changes you make such as DNS modifications, or contact information changes will need to be done after you unlock the domain. The common error you will receive will be something such as this if you do not unlock the domain before making a modification.
